Growth Opportunities for Indian SME’s

The SME (Small & Medium Enterprise) segment in India has recently been receiving much more attention. With the introduction of Micro Small & Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act 2006, the sector is being increasingly viewed as an agent for economic growth by Government institutions,corporate bodies and banks. The policy focus and the Government’s thrust towards promoting the SME segment, along with globalisation and India’s robust economic growth, have paved the way to several latent business opportunities for this segment. This document attempts to discuss key SME sectors in Southern India. It initially takes a closer look at the overall SME scenario in India and maps the trends observed on four specific sectors – specifically in the area of Electronics, Auto Component, Textile & Leather post liberalisation. It explores the challenges that SMEs in these sectors face in today’s competitive market and builds on the latter by introducing areas for improvement. Finally, it attempts to benchmark Indian SMEs across these sectors with global players on a number of dimensions.
