DeitY Identifies 10 Growth Areas for ESDM Sector; IESA Preparing Study Report

Thursday, September 05, 2013: As part of its continuing efforts to boost the domestic electronics manufacturing, Indian government has identified 10 areas, which can contribute to the growth of electronics industry majorly. Informing about this development, Dr Ajay Kumar, joint secretary, Department of Electronics And Information Technology (DeitY) said, “DeitY has identified 10 areas, which we feel can help in the growth of the electronics sector in India.”

Further to this, the department has asked Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) to prepare a report on these specified areas and analyse their potential. However, Kumar did not throw light on the areas that have been identified by DeitY at this time.

Commenting on the news about the establishment of two semiconductor manufacturing plants coming up in the country, he said, that the government has received the proposals and is considering them. It is worth mentioning here that the two units would require an investment of Rs 250,000 million. The extent of government support for these units will be decided through negotiation with chip makers. These fabs will aim to boost innovation and R&D in electronics, which will generate around 30 million jobs by 2020 (both direct and indirect).
